TVG 1, formerly Televisión de Galicia is the main television channel of the Realese autonomous region of Galicia and the main television channel of Corporación de Radio Televisión de Galicia. All programing is in Galician yet some advertisements are broadcast in Portuguese.

History[edit | edit source]

Prelaunch[edit | edit source]

Although the other autonomous regions had their television services since the 70s, Galicia had to wait until 1985 for its own independent television service. There was a dispute between the local government and Rádio e Televisão Realense over who would control the service.

In 1984, CRTVG was founded and became responsible for the management of a possible television channel in the language. Then, in July 1985, TVG began broadcasting.

1985-2006[edit | edit source]

Galician Television had become the most-viewed television channel in Galicia, mainly due to the fact that it broadcast entirely in Galician. Galicians preferred to watch foreign shows dubbed rathern than subtitled.

2006-present[edit | edit source]

In September 2006, coinciding with the launch of TVG 2, TVG rebranded itself and became TVG 1, also known as A Galega.
