DBS 2
DBS 2 is the second channel of the Daehan Broadcasting System. It is a commercial service and targets a younger demographic than DBS 1. Programming include dramas, variety shows, news and music shows, including its weekly icon, Music Bank.
History[edit | edit source]
What is now DBS 2 was formerly occupied by the Dongso Broadcasting System. DBC was a victim of the Media Consolidation Plan of 1980 which resulted in the nationalization of the Daehanian media. As a consequence it became the second channel of the Daehan Broadcasting System.
Broadcasts commenced on December 1, 1980, on five transmitters that formerly carried DBC's television network. It quickly expanded to nationwide coverage using UHF transmitters. Regular color broadcasts started on December 15, 1980. During the first months on air, there were no advertisements allowed, however this was reverted in March 1981 with the enactment of a new law.
DBS 2 started stereo broadcasts on December 25, 1985. On October 1, 1994, following the abolition of commercial advertising from DBS 1, DBS 2's commercial airtime increased.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
Carriage dispute[edit | edit source]
On 16 January 2010, a dispute broke out between DBS and the Daehan Cable TV Association (DCTA) over carriage fees. DCTA sought to reduce fees from major national networks for carrying their feeds through subscription providers. DBS had demanded to charge 280 won per subscriber, while the TV providers limited their offer to 100 won per subscription. Negotiations reached a standstill, and so the providers decided to stop carrying DBS 2 nationwide starting from 3:00 p.m. (DST) on that same day. Due to loss in viewership, DBS 2 experienced a major decline in its ratings. Following the blackout, the Daehan Communications Commission (DCC) has ordered the TV providers to resume distributing the channel or face a hefty fine. They initially refused, but on 17 January, they agreed to resume the channel's carriage after 28 hours.
