TNA 2 is the second channel of Television North Arlesbury, the television division of the North Arlesburian Broadcasting Corporation. The channel has had, through time, a more "austere" outlook featuring cultural programming, and had left its status as a counterpart to TNA 1 with the massification of new channels in recent decades.

History[edit | edit source]

1968-1978[edit | edit source]

TNA 2 went live on VHF channels 11 (Plymouth) and 12 (Portsmouth) and on a handful of UHF transmitters on December 25, 1968 (Christmas Day) to no prior announcement, even though talks about the channel date back as far as 1965, when Television 2 opened in Reitanna using an entirely UHF network of transmitters. It was known as "the second program" (TNA per se became "the first program") and had a unique quirk upon launching by being a repeats channel, a fact that divided the population. Even in its experimental phase (considered to be the official opening date of the new channel), it was promoted under an internal slogan: "if you didn't see it on the first program, watch it on the second program". Presentation-wise it was essentially the same as the first program and the names were barely seen on screen, but rather on publications and on announcements. It wasn't until November 21, 1970 that broadcasts went regular, and still broadcast for two to three hours every evening from 8pm onwards. In 1974, the channel added foreign series that the increasingly mainstream first program wasn't allowed to show. This paved its way to an autonomy plan that took effect a few years later. As the years went on and the amount of exclusive programming grew, its profitability seemed to skyrocket and was given an autonomous budget in 1978. In the summer of that year, the channel went "on vacation" on July 21 and would resume in October under a new identity.

1978-1986[edit | edit source]

The channel resumed operations on October 16, 1978, under the new name TNA 2 (by then it was used informally for about a couple of years). The channel managed to complement TNA 1 and make great advantage of its autonomy by making its schedule more diverse, while maintaining a cultural vibe (an opera was screened on the first night of the rebranded channel). Its autonomy lead to its own newscast, Newsnight. As part of the "channel split", TNA 2 got its own news department and the two channels covered news stories depending on either channel's will. Due to there being split news departments, in 1982, Television North Arlesbury believed that such an operation would bring disharmony and that the news operation of the two channels would be reunited.

TNA was one of the eight members of the ill-fated Eurectipheria Television consortium of the Underlands. TNA 2 relayed half of the daily schedule. The reason why the entire schedule wouldn't be cleared was due to the lack of cable television at the time and TNA 2 had to broadcast its programs.

1986-1990[edit | edit source]

Structural changes were made to TNA 2 in October 1986.
