SIX (Flarland)
SIX was a digital (internet, digital radio, satellite cable and DTT) station operated by the Flarlandian Broadcasting Corporation from June 1998 to September 2016. The station's name suggested it as being an "extension" of FBC Radio 3.
History[edit | edit source]
The station was initially suggested to be known as FBC Radio 6, and its format was yet to be known. In November 1997, the format was announced on an internal meeting: a complementary youth station, targeting a more "risqué" demographic than the "mainstream" Radio 3 and was to be available online.
On June 21, 1998, SIX went live on the official website of the FBC. This was the first time a Flarlandian broadcaster owned a radio station broadcasting exclusively through the internet. There were many complaints regarding the nature of the operation, and within a few weeks, the station was added "offline" on digital cable and satellite platforms.
Programming during most of its existence focused on alternative tracks, heavy and death metal and the Flarlandian altnation genre, named after a program on SIX.
In 2002, following the launch of Freeview, SIX changed its schedule.
In 2016, it was announced that, as part of a general review of its operations, SIX would shut down in September in order to make room for a new service, CFBC Radio, as part of a restructuring of CFBC's operations, in order to make the channel commercial-free. SIX's last broadcast was a rerun of its first day on air, ending with a special prose composed for the station's departure, and lastly, the national anthem.
