XBC Television is the television service of the Xalxas Broadcasting Corporation.

History[edit | edit source]

Television arrived to the Xalxas Autonomy in 1972, when the LRT transmitter network was now in decent conditions to cover the region. Viewers had to choose between LBC 5 and LBC 8 - relayed on channels 4 and 10 respectively - but there was no room for Xalxas-language programming.

Likewise, the lack of any Xalxas-language programming was reflected in the fact that the first television sets owned by Xalxans were all members of the elite of the time. It is believed that if television couldn't broadcast programming in Xalxan, television wouldn't be popular.

A significant growth in the ownership of television sets around 1989 made the Xalxan government worry about giving a television station to the XBC, but even XBC wasn't financially successful at the time. Numerous public consultancies with Lenaporean and Nosghelian public figures and television channels were made, but nothing on the regard of the XBC.

XBC started television broadcasts on 1 March 1999. It initially broadcast for four hours a day. Most of the content was local. It later added dubbed TCL/Mediacorp productions to its schedule, but the need for local content was still high.

It did manage to get a program from the Handakian Broadcasting Corporation, Mahayan Nasghedamus, launched in 1997, and created a local edition in Xalxan. Both programs were created to entertain both autonomous regions and show their culture.

In May 2015 it was made available nationwide for the first time on Starhub TV and Lentel TV.

Editorial pratices[edit | edit source]

Up until 2004, XBC Television was heavily dominated by a strict Vartra regulation. Broadcasts started and ended with readings from the Book of Vartra. Foreign programming was censored to comply with Vartra standards.

Some Muslim programs made for LBC/LTV12/Mediacorp Suria and LPBS were shown but had to comply with small disparate differences between the two religions.
