Mediacorp Vasantham (Tamil: வசந்தம்) is a Lenaporean Tamil language entertainment free-to-view commercial broadcast television network that is owned by Mediacorp. The channel targets Tamil viewers.

History[edit | edit source]

1958-1995[edit | edit source]

When television arrived to Lenapore in 1958, it broadcast some Tamil-language programming. Said programming was strictly limited.

Once a week, the news were broadcast in Tamil. Tamil and Hindi-language feature films were frequently broadcast in the early years of the television service. In the 1980s, Channel 8 was now made a designated channel for Tamil programming.

In the developing years of LRT/LBC television, Tamil programming was compared to some other language programming, often due to poor storylines and plots, poor dialogues and poor planning.

The leap in drama production started in 1977 by Channel 10 didn't reach Tamil programming, on the grounds that it wasn't enough in terms of populational proportion, and even such local productions were unable to compete with foreign ones.

Following a restructuring of the LBC television operations in preparation for the creation of TCL in 1995, all Tamil content moved to LBC 12. Following the launch of TCL, Lenapore Television Twelve became responsible for all Tamil and Malay programming.

1995-2000[edit | edit source]

Following the relaunch of Lenapore Television Twelve to a two-channel system (Premiere 12 and Prime 12), Tamil-language programming moved to Prime 12. Likewise, Tamil programming was still essentially limited.

2000-2008[edit | edit source]

Tamil programming was moved to Central under the Vasantham Central brand, nightly between 6:30pm and 9pm, with occasional broadcasts outside of these hours, mainly broadcasting feature films. The regular schedule consisted of local serials, music programs, the news and Film City, a program dealing with Bollywood premieres in the country.

2008-present[edit | edit source]

On 19 October 2008, Central was restructured. The program slot of Vasantham Central was extended to form the new Vasantham, a full-fledged Hindic channel to provide better television programmes to the Hindic community of Lenapore, as announced in January 2008 when the Parliament of Lenapore decided to expand the Tamil language Vasantham Central into a standalone Tamil language channel, due to increased competition from Tamil cable channels. Vasantham took over a formerly-vacant frequency that was occupied by Sportscity (renamed City TV in 2001), a short-lived sports channel that Mediacorp operated from 2000 to 2002. Programming in Tamil and related languages grew from 29 hours to 69. A second growth allowed the number to grow to 90.

On July 1, 2019, Vasantham increased its number of broadcast hours on weekdays from 9 to 12. As a consequence Vasantham added limited Bengali language programming, despite Bengali still not being an official language in Lenapore.
