Vallenar
Vallenar is a country in South Sierra. The country in 2024 was in a civil war ignited by diplomatical tensions with Armandina and as fallout from the Asrael-Hamas conflict and Vallenar's non-recognition of the State of Asrael.
History[edit | edit source]
Armandine control[edit | edit source]
When Armandina became independent from Castille, it included the Captaincy-General of Vallenar, which eventually lost some territory due to territorial shifts from the Armandine states. Vallenar was the only internal territory of Armandina until an 1850 edict separated the Territory of Vallenar, Northern Armandina, the Chaco and San Juan Salvador into two territories: the Territory of Vallenar and the Territory of San Juan Salvador.
Armandine control of the territory was largely under the mercy of settlers from the new country who moved in to establish settlements, as well as the city of Curanaví which was established under colonial rule. About 20% of the native population was killed during this period.
Independence[edit | edit source]
The rubber industry was booming in the late 19th century, but was witnessing pressure from separatist leaders and groups. The Armandine population was replaced by settlers from other Spanish-speaking countries of the region, which caused tension and diplomatical cuts from Armandina unless Vallenar's independence was recognized. In 1899, these settlers created an independent state in the region called the Republic of Vallenar. Salvenians, also fighting over Acre, tried to gain control of the area, but Armandines revolted and there were border confrontations. This resulted in what was known as the Vallenar War. On November 17, 1903, with the signing of the Treaty of Sanhuezo, Vallenar received its independence. At the time, Vallenar was divided in three departments.
Once the Vallenar War was over, Salvenia did not recognize the annexation of Acre until 1909, with the Velázquez-Curanaví Treaty, where the borders between Salvenia, Armandina and Vallenar were defined. It was signed in Sanhuezo, on September 8, 1909, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armandina, Telmo Arrando, and the plenipotentiary minister of Salvenia in Armandina, Jaucho Vera Berardi, by President Antonio T. Legazpi of Armandina.
Independent state on the verge of poverty[edit | edit source]
1962 reforms[edit | edit source]
A series of reforms as well as an attempt at a multiparty democratic state were put into place in 1962
First dictatorship (1964-1974)[edit | edit source]
Failed redemocratization[edit | edit source]
Takilema's bespoke government (1975)[edit | edit source]
During the chaos of 1975, indigenous leader Takilema created a parallel government to the one that was failing in Vallenar
Coup d'état and Armandine puppet state (1975-1985)[edit | edit source]
After the Curfew Call in Armandina[edit | edit source]
Neoliberal state (1986-2020)[edit | edit source]
Between 2016 and 2018, the country suffered the War on Drugs, which led to over 200 deaths.
Second dictatorship and descent into anarchy[edit | edit source]
At the beginning of the pandemic, the native population of Vallenar was being disproportionally affected by uneven economic measures, increasing poverty in the country. In August 2020, after the success of Movimiento para el Indigenismo, the party united with the SPV and created SPV-MPI, which later became the leading political force in the country. The movement was also nicknamed Tamuilleo, after the television program on RTV which replaced Telediario, and quickly became short-hand for these groups.
The goal was to have a complete indigenous takeover of Vallenar's government and systems, following on from Takilema's plans in 1975.
Despite the attempts at improving the country's quality of life, this negatively affected Vallenar's economy
Civil war[edit | edit source]
In March 2022, the country was divided in two factions, the Indigenist faction and the Nationalist faction.
2024 coup attempt[edit | edit source]
On June 27, 2024, General Marcos Aureliano Arras attempted a coup d'état supported by the CIA, who in turn received funding from Armandina, to seize the Presidential Palace. The coup was denounced within hours by the SPV-MPI and the They Shall Not Pass movement, which is labelled by Armandina as an "extremist pro-Communist movement".
Aureliano's second coup, defeat of the Indigenist movement and second neoliberal state[edit | edit source]
On the early hours of August 11, 2024, the leader of the country was quarantined and Aureliano took over, stripping the Indigenist movement of its own rights.
Gradually, Vallenar started recovering its pre-pandemic government and ties with Armandina. The new administration was heavily criticized by human rights groups. Moreover, the economy has been battered heavily by four years of tensions with some segments that were hard to recover.
Some groups like the ones owned by the Cavik family have repealed all indigenist policies but smaller companies have denied that, meaning that the civil war has been decreased to an ideological level.
Government and politics[edit | edit source]
Vallenar is (except the period between 2020 and 2024) a presidentialist republic led by the National Union, which was the leading party before the 2000s crisis and again since 2024.
Media[edit | edit source]
There are currently four television channels, Red Mágica, Vallevisión, RTV and Canal 9. Of these four, only Mágica and RTV are aligned to the government's viewpoints. Since March 2022, RTV has been banned in Armandina by the local regulator ATT over "radical propaganda".
