The Unauthorized History of Flarland is a television series produced by Richard Atkins for Couch Slave Entertainment in 2000. It was shown on Channel 14 between 2001 and 2003. The series is "hosted" by Atkins, who is depicted here as a hapless "time detective". The series primarily features instances of sarcastic comedy, irony and "real" interviews.

Reruns of the series were carried on Channel A until 2008, by then they were moved to sister channel A Plus until it was dropped in 2010.

Premise[edit | edit source]

The series is a mockumentary and spoofs the kind of local documentary found on Channel Thirteen and Channel 15 at the time the show was on. Each episode falls under the same structure: an off-screen introduction to the subject is read by Atkins over altered photos. Atkins is later seen on screen preparing to enter a "time machine" (a gray portable restroom). Later, we see Atkins travelling to the past and talking to whoever made the so-called "history" in the first place, in a seemingly anachronistic view of the past.

Episodes seem to include an interview with "accurate re-enactments" of the interviewee or related people. These appear in 24 of the 26 episodes, and always in the middle. The only exceptions are Sick Day and The Real Truth behind The Unauthorized History of Flarland.

The episode ends with Atkins returning to the present and ending with his iconic catchphrase: "And that's history for you. Who knows what we will see next". An exception was made on the last episode, The Real Truth about the Unauthorized History of Flarland, where the episode, supposedly about the Flarlandian government, was pulled at the last minute by the production team, who later realized that the time machine is actually fake and that the historical figures are, in fact, actors. In this episode, the closing catchphrase was uttered by the fiscal agent and was changed to "And that was history for you. Who knows what Atkins' fate might be".
