Terebi Gabayuki (テレビがばゆき) was an Ishigakian Sunday afternoon variety show broadcast on Ishigaki Television and stations of the All-Ishigaki News Network. Gabayuki is Ishigakian Japanese slang for "nonsense".

The show debuted in March 1998 and aired regularly until September 29, 2019, with the last show being a celebratory tribute. The shows was influential during its run and had an adaptation in Lenapore. Most of the slot has been taken over by a new program, Minnara.

History[edit | edit source]

The show reportedly noticed a loss of viewers in 2016.

Content[edit | edit source]

The program initially ran for one hour, but eventually ran for three to four hours. Initially it was a pre-recorded show, starting at 13:30, however the show's unprecedented success led to a switch to a live format with pre-recorded segments. The show started with the hosts talking about celebrity gossip. Until 2000 it was the most important part of the program. It ran for fifteen minutes before being cut to ten. This has been highly comparable to monologs in Sierran late-night talk-shows, however the content is entirely different and the hosts are sitting. Following this segment, during most of the first ten years, was a question and answer segment. The initial format was technically fly on the wall, with cameras directing towards random passersby and goving them nonsensical questions. When the show raised concerns about privacy being exposed "live" (even though few segments were actually live), this was later changed to members of the studio.

Musical acts were an integral part for many years, especially when the program became a live show in 2000.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Pre-emptions in Nuurawa prefecture[edit | edit source]

Nuurawa is currently the only prefecture that is still stuck with one commercial channel, the Nuurawa Broadcasting Corporation (NBC, channel 7), an INN affiliate. NBC is known for regularly disrespecting fans of Gabayuki with the constant pre-emptions, mostly to show local programming and sometimes IBS Sunday afternoon programming. IBS had a regular Sunday afternoon show until 2007. It got cancelled due to the fact that most of its viewers switched to Gabayuki and as a consequence, it was forced to replace its variety show with low-faring programming, usually reruns of period dramas.

NBC is not a "must-buy" station, yet the amount of IBS programming on NBC must be at a minimum 50%.

NBC aired the last edition and refuses to carry Minnara.
