TV3 Pakifas was founded in 1998 to break the monopoly claimed by Voice of Pakifas for 36 years. Until 2002 it was viewed as one of the most technologically-advanced television channels in the world, before it shut down due to legal issues. Currently it is the second most-watched television channel in the Pakifas with VOP One taking the top spot.

History[edit | edit source]

A license was awarded to TV3 Pakifas in September 1996 and broadcasts commenced on April 14, 1998. It broadcast four hours a day on weekdays and eight on weekends. Although the channel screened a high amount of imports, the channel was committed to screen quality local productions, in the English and Pakifan languages.

Legal vindication and shutdown[edit | edit source]

In early 2002, reports had emerged that the licenses used to broadcast TV3 Pakifas' signal were considered "illegal" and that the Pakifan Broadcasting Corporation was winning the battle. The results were announced at 22:30 Pakifan time on the night of March 5, 2002, when an announcer speaking for TV3 Pakifas said the following:

"My friends, old and new acquaintances, we have come to the end of programs not for today, but forever, unless someone reignites the flame of our channel. We deeply regret to tell that the license TV3 Pakifas had to broadcast was on behalf of the Pakifan government and the accusations that have emerged saying that this channel was pro-opposition. We believed in fair, neutral and balanced news for everyone and had an estimated daily reach of 300.000 people using our satellite footprint, as well as our base of 250.000 living within the Pakifas, regardless of language or country. It is time to pull the plug on all our transmitting methods, with our terrestrial signal, microwave links for the Pakifas, cable links and by satellite. We believed in you over these past four years on air and we must say that this shutdown is an attack on the freedom of press, almost comparable to the shutdown of Commercial Radio Pakifas more than thirty years ago. On behalf of the TV3 Pakifas team, we wish all of our viewers goodnight and farewell."

Seconds after the message, the carrier was cut.
