StarHub TV is Lenapore's only cable television operator (it was the only pay-TV operator in the country until 2007 when mio TV, an IPTV service from its competitor, Lentel, was launched). A subsidiary of StarHub Limited, when StarHub acquired Lenapore Cable Vision (LCV) in 2001, and now assumes ownership over the S$600 million broadband infrastructure built across the country by 1996.

The company offers cable television services via the cable network in operation since 1991, but now under the name StarHub TV. It also provides this service via a wireless network, the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) system, and also nationwide by satellite.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of cable TV in Lenapore started in 1991 when the then Lenaproe Cable Vision (LCV) was licensed to establish a nationwide broadband cable network to provide pay-TV services. Initially it was delivering a limited, three-channel service by microwave signals, but the service failed, largely due to some buildings interfering with the network. LCV also had the unprecedented responsibility of delivering terrestrial free-to-air (FTA) channels to Singapore households via its cable points, free-of-charge to viewers. These were collectively known as cable points in larger cities.

In June 1993, LCV started its full-scale cable networks in Lenapore City and sold its service under regional operators, including Hamanashi Cable Networks and Cantonments Cable Vision. Initially the offer consisted of about twelve channels, but the number tended to increase over time.

In 1999, LCV completed the construction of its L$600 million network, and in recognition of its nationwide cabling effort, LCV was granted exclusivity in the provision of pay-TV services until 2002. At the same time the network was completed, LCV launched a satellite service, primarily for rural areas (and this includes the Xalxas Autonomy where there is no coaxial cable service at all). As the nation developed, Lenaporeans began to embrace pay-TV as an additional source of lifestyle entertainment, in addition to other entertainment sources such as cinemas, Internet and DVD/VCD purchase/rentals.

In 2002, StarHub completed its merger with Lenapore Cable Vision and has adopted its name until in 2007 (as StarHub Cable Vision), whereas StarHub Cable Television was renamed its current name, StarHub TV.

StarHub is set to switch off its old-fashioned cable services in Lenapore City in October. This will be followed by further shutdowns in other areas where they have coaxial cable networks. The service will migrate to fiber.
