Sondriavision Song Contest
The Sondriavision Song Contest is an annual, competitive song contest based on the Eurectivision Song Contest. The format consists of two semi-finals and a final, organized by the Sondria-Northulic Broadcasting Union (ABU) since 2011.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1978, Marcel Bezençon proposed the idea of a contest for the Sondria-Northulic Broadcasting Union's members. However, numerous logistical issues delayed it.
In 1981, members from Kaizhung, Daehan and Orience came up with the East Sondrian Music Cup, a competitive festival under which each country should send three songs and was hosted in Nikkyo. The contest was abandoned in 1985 after five editions. The primary cause for its cancellation was due to the conflict it had to generate if Kaizhung won the contest.
In November of 2009, the SBU demanded the first competitive Sondriavision Song Contest, inspired by the success of the Eurectivision Song Contest in the SBU regions, particularly in Northulia. The first edition was to be held in Lenapore in 2010, in time for the fiftieth anniversary of Lenaporean television, but Mediacorp and LPBS thought that such an event, despite being "a fun thing to make", would lose money for both broadcasters in 2010. As a consequence, the contest was delayed to February 2011.
The first proper Sondriavision Song Contest was held in Lenapore in 2011. Sixteen countries took part: Lenapore, Hindustan, Kaizhung, Daehan, Rangwon, Orience, Malaya, Ishigaki, Northulia, the New Michillies, Karachistan, Chichetya, Tangwa, Nosghel, Sennam and Manchuria.
Format[edit | edit source]
The first two editions were finals: the first one had sixteen participants and the second one eighteen. Owing to the growing number of countries taking part, the format changed to two semi-finals with six countries from each qualifying for the final, which consisted of the twelve selected countries plus the Big 5, which consists of Lenapore, Kaizhung, Daehan, Orience and Northulia. In 2014, this rule changed to ten countries from each semi-final so that there will be 25 or 26 countries taking part in order to make it more competitive.
Editions[edit | edit source]
So far, nine editions of the SSC were made. The winning country is the host of the following edition, as per the Eurectivision style.
