Template loop detected: Template:NationInfo The Sentinelese Republic is a sovereign insular country in Sondria, formed by ten islands, and is constituted as a social and democratic state of law and whose form of government is the semi-presidential republic.

The country is widely considered to be the poorest in Sondria and houses the Sentinelese tribe, the world's only pre-Iron Age tribe, which accounts to only a few dozen inhabitants on an island distanced by the mainland.

History[edit | edit source]

It is known that the main Sentinelese islands were settled by Nosghelic tribes as early as 900BC. Sources from 500BC claim that the islands were by then part of the Nosghelian Empire, at the time one of the greatest claimed civilizations in Nara.

The islands were colonized by the Michillies in 1649, who settled on the main island and included it as part of the Gibbon Island colony. The Michillians introduced trading, the English language and currency to the islanders.

Claiming of the islands was transferred to Nosghel in 1898 due to "sentimental reasons", making the Sentinelese Islands an overseas territory. However, there was massive instability and the islands declared their independence from Nosghel in 1926. A presidential, one-party system was put into place.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Sentinelese Republic consists primarily of two main inhabited islands, Upper Sentinel (with 204 inhabitants) and Lower Sentinel (with 168 inhabitants). There are also smaller islands, the most notable of which is North Sentinel Island. Outside of the Sentinelese Republic, the island is closed to foreign tourism and is known for the indigenous tribe left uncontacted from modern civilization.

Official census figures say that the country has a total 715 inhabitants, yet some organizations like the AoN and the World Bank claim that there are 775. A book about the subject, The Missing Sentinelese, based on an academic publication from 2008, draws upon these issues as there are claims that the missing people are actually living abroad.

Government and politics[edit | edit source]

The country is ruled directly by the president and no political party is imposed. The country's parliament consists of about four seats and holds weekly meetings.

The elections are considered to be flawed, similar to elections in Joseon for decades.

The country has diplomatic relations with Lenapore and Nosghel.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The country has two cultures: Traditional Sentinelese, with about 100 people, whose people live mainly outside of the main islands and Nosghelic Sentinelese, with about 350 people.

The country has two official languages: Sentinelese and English, with 40% of the population being bilingual. A handful of people, mainly the reduced group of Nosghelians living on the island, speak Tagalog. There were attempts at introducing Tagalog at the Botora Basic School in 2011, but without success.

A notable product of the country is Bara Buti.

Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

The Sentinelese Republic has a poor infrastructure in the Upper and Lower Sentinelese Islands.

Media[edit | edit source]

The island runs a newspaper since at least 1980, known as The Sentinelese Islander. The newspaper started out as a monthly publication, by 1990 it had become fortnightly and by 1996 weekly.

The Sentinelese Broadcasting Corporation holds a de facto monopoly on radio and television broadcasting. It operates one radio station and one television channel. An internet stream of the radio station was connected in 2007 following Nosghelian technological aid.

The internet was switched on in 2003, yet in 1998, a website, known as Waking Sentinelese, created in Lenapore from the only reported "immigrant", Lee Churora, gave the country some international recognition. The internet is accessed by one in ten inhabitants, only twelve registered Facebook users exist in the country. There are nine websites hosted in the Sentinelese Republic, mostly for the state enterprises such as the SBC or the Sentinelese National Bank. The national ccTLD is controlled by Nosghel.
