Sakura is one of the three Japanese national terrestrial television channels in Lenapore and one of the two channels entirely in the language owned by Mediacorp. It launched in 1972 as TV Lenapura (LRT, later LBC) Channel 10 and adopted its current name after a 1994 re-structuring.

Sakura broadcasts a wide variety of programs, including news, sports, len-doramas, variety shows and imported dramas and anime from Orience and Ishigaki, some dubbed foreign content like Sierran series is also broadcast on the channel.

History[edit | edit source]

Channel 10's frequency was briefly occupied by LAFRA in 1965, however Lenaporean Radio and Television considered it to be an "illegal act" and that the frequency's usage would be allowed if there was market for a third channel. In the wake of this event, the Japanese-speaking Lenaporeans demanded a channel for them, as Channel 5 was mostly showing their programs in secondary time slots.

A feasibility study for a third channel was made in 1970 and it was announced that the channel would open on April 1, 1972. About 60% of the programming was in Japanese, but had substantial amounts of programming in other languages.

In the following year, Television Lenapura sorted the languages of its services. Channel 10 started broadcasting a higher weekly proportion of programming in Japanese, oging up to 90%, with the remaining 10% mostly in English, and would also include leftovers from the two other networks in other languages.

In 1994, on October 1st, Channel 10 was oficially renamed Sakura, using a name and symbol that was claimed by TCL to be "of a greater significance to the Japanese peoples of Lenapore". The channel was supposed to be rebranded earlier on in the year as Channel 10, but the rebrand was eventually rejected.

Language[edit | edit source]

The channel's primary language has always been Japanese - the channel was founded when the two extant LRT channels were screening programming in mixed languages rather than giving each channel its own language. However, even in this stage, it was also prone to broadcast shows in Tamil and Malay.
