Pakifan Screen is a Pakifan commercial television channel founded in 2003.

History[edit | edit source]

Founded in 2002 by a group of businessmen who wanted to retry entering the TV game after the vindication that led to the suspension of TV3 Pakifas, Pakifan Screen was set up to provide a "clear and coherent" alternative to PTV 1 and 2 (now VOP One and Two). The channel signed a contract with the Pakifan Telecommunications Corporation in October 2002, and achieved must-carry status - despite not having any terrestrial frequencies - in December of that year. The channel wanted to fill in the void caused by TV3 Pakifas' shutdown in July 1998. Much of its workforce came from the channel.

Initially slated to launch in May 2003, the launch was then pushed to July 3, 2003, on PTC cable channel 4 (the channel 3 slot was reserved for TV3 Pakifas in case of return and at the time it was used by its terrestrial occupier Northulia Television International). It initially ran a 16-hour schedule starting at 8am, consisting mainly of imports. The channel didn't start 24/7 broadcasts until the following year.

Businessman Rahiro Ngekioreng bought Pakifan Screen in March 2004, aiming it to become a terrestrial television channel, using new terrestrial frequencies as the then-PBC had usurped the frequencies for a ten-year period to relay NTI. Allegations had emerged that Ngekioreng was a close relative of then-Pakifan president Olio Olovu and that Pakifan Screen was its crown jewel. Former political director Damien Rampere was arrested.

Pakifan Screen's offices were damaged for the first time in 2004, then witnessing small aftershocks of the December 26 tsunami that didn't damage much of the Pakifan capital Ngamiben. A fire broke out at Pakifan Screen's building on February 26, 2007, but it was quickly controlled.

Unable to attain an analog terrestrial license because of the winning bid by film and television producer RayCONCEPT, using the frequencies to broadcast Ray TV, Pakifan Screen joined the consortium that set up digital terrestrial television in the Pakifas and applied for a channel. Digital terrestrial broadcasts started on February 26, 2009 (initially scheduled for Pakifan Screen to be on February 19, but this coincided with the last episode of the second season of Pang-ang Hirobeng Ngatu).

Following the extraditing of Olio Olovu and the election of Rodrick Hasing, the channel rebranded in December 2012.

On October 1, 2017, HD broadcasts started.

In April 2019, Pakifan Screen announced the launch of Pakifan Screen International, aiming at the Pakifan diaspora, however the channel is currently only available in mainland Flarland, disrespecting the diaspora in Northulia and Lenapore who is deprived from finding legal ways to watch some of its in-house programming. The channel launched on May 11, 2019.

On April 19, 2021, the Pakifan government requested the suspension of Pakifan Screen and Decibels TV from the Pakifan territory as part of irregularities that the two channels faced regarding political issues, including its promotion of Olovuism in the past. As consequence Pakifan Screen had to change its schedule on the night of April 20, airing from 8pm a four-hour special called Ia Rakene Pakifan Screen (Farewell Pakifan Screen) with the hope of the issue being solved. Pakifan Screen International continued operating, whereas new programming (exclusive to this version of Pakifan Screen, in this case news and talent competitions) would be seen exclusively over this channel. Similar to ABS-CBN's agreements with LBTV and Zoe TV to carry its programming on other channels, Pakifan Screen agreed that the 2021 season of Stars on the Stage was to be seen on Ray TV, who unilaterally accepted a package of movies produced by XR Films that was initially set to be shown on Pakifan Screen. On April 28, 2021, a watered-down version of Pakifan Screen started operating outside of the Pakifas. Initial hopes were for the channel to resume operations by July 3, in practice Pakifan Screen's coming of age day. The news operation was suspended in October 2021.

On the evening of January 11, 2022, Pakifan Screen suspended its remaining operations permanently, according to official sources, during an episode of the rerun of the 2016 series Henana. The same slide seen in the Pakifan terrestrial broadcast appeared and as of January 14 is still up. On the morning of January 12, Pakifan Screen employees protested against the decision, as it laid off 80 employees permanently, coupled with the shutdown of its studios. Rumors circulated online that the Pakifan government would assure a continued operation of Pakifan Screen within and outside the Pakifas, but these reports were later given as false by both the government and the channel's administration.

On the afternoon of January 18, Pakifan Screen resumed operations. After a few days the channel limited its programming to a loop of recorded shows.

On February 15, 2022, the government greenlighted the return of Pakifan Screen to terrestrial television in the Pakifas, with no date announced. Later the channel announced a resumption of operations on April 4, with pre-recorded programming, and live--programming returning on May 1, under the condition that Pakifan Screen was unabble to broadcast news content.

A scandal happened on June 15, 2022 during The Stage, interrupting an interview in the process.

The election of Paimerene Olovu causes the channel to continue under the influence of the state, but unlike TV3 Pakifas, another confiscated channel, the news operation is still debilitated.
