The Okutawa Broadcasting Corporation (奥田和放送) is a local radio and television station broadcasting to Ningyojima prefecture. It is abbreviated as OHK.

Overview[edit | edit source]

  • The station is affiliated to ORN and NRN on radio and ONN on television. It is the only commercial radio station in the prefecture (TV has competition from NTS).
  • The callsign used by the station is AKFF/-FM/-(D)TV.
  • The coverage is all of Ningyojima prefecture including the islands of Tateyama and Kunaishi.
  • The station's Furuga influence lies in the name Okutawa Broadcasting. Closing theme (radio and TV) is Song of Yamoi Tsurui since the first radio and TV broadcasts (radio shuts down for maintenance once a week Sunday to Monday overnight 01:00 to 05:30 and TV nightly 02:00 to 04:45).
  • OBC isn't a must-buy station due to the monopoly.

History[edit | edit source]

  • August 1, 1951: Authorized the opening of a radio station for Ningyojima prefecture in Okutawa city.
  • October 30, 1952: Begins operation. Due to isolation from the rest of the mainland, the station is opened as de facto independent.
  • November 12, 1957: Receives authorization to start television broadcasts.
  • December 1, 1958: OBC TV signs on (VHF channel 6, AKFF-TV). Due to isolation, despite signing in for the Orience News Network, the station is mostly independent. It broadcast about four hours a day the entire week.
  • December 10, 1959: Formal access to ONN begins. Before the development of satellite technology, news from the mainland and abroad were received by radio.
  • June 1, 1963: The Tateyama TV relay station (channel 9) is opened.
  • May 2, 1965: Enters the ORN network.
  • February 25: Signing of a co-operation agreement with IBS in Ishigaki. This was three days before its television service in Hamamoto started.
  • May 5, 1968: Reception of color equipment.
  • November 23, 1968: Rejection of the bill allowing for the creation of a second television channel in the prefecture (channel 37 tentatively affiliated to FNN) and subsequent relocation of the new station to channel 11.
  • May 1, 1999: Public revealing of the merman mascots Rogyo and Ninku.
  • December 1, 2006: Start of digital terrestrial broadcasts (same day as THK General and THK Educational). The LCN is 6.
  • December 1, 2017: FM simulcasts start, AKFF-FM. In line with the launch, the new character Efu is added.

Radio[edit | edit source]

Frequencies[edit | edit source]

  • AM 666 KHz (680 KHz until the change of the frequency plan)

Please note that Ningyojima will refuse to switch off AM radio broadcasts in 2025. A new decision will be taken at the long term.

Changes in the network structure[edit | edit source]

  • December 1, 1958: The station broadcast content from KRN (now NBS), TTV, Fusa TV (from 1959) and Asahi Broadcasting (from 1959). Although it was aligned with ONN, it was de facto independent due to lack of infrastructure. Also, although it joined the ONN news network, it was positioned as a Ningyojima branch office at that time and could not broadcast networked news. For this reason, despite the name "ONN News" (Evening News is "ONN TV Evening Edition"), all news had to be produced in-house as a temporary measure for handling special planned network programs until the line was opened.
  • February 28, 1965: Following the opening of the microwave line linking the mainland to Ningyojima, broadcasting of ONN news programs becomes possible. In addition, it will be possible to receive broadcasts over the network from Nikkyo and Kato in the same way as the mainland. Since then, the news has officially jumped to NBS and the program to cherry-picking, just like the mainland.
  • October 1, 1969: Thanks to the opening of TUO (UHF channel 37, moved to VHF channel 11 in 1975 as OTS), the Fusa TV programming disappeared because it joined the FNN network. After that, with NBS as the main source, programs from Tohon TV, TET TV, and Nikkyo 12 channels will be shared with TUO, in broadcast and program sales.
  • March 31, 1975: Due to the network changes in Kato, MBS programs are realigned to OBC.
  • April 1, 1993: OTS switches to ANN. Some FNN programming is shared between the two stations.
