Northulia
Northulia, officially the Federated States of Northulia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Northulian continent, the island of Abelia and numerous smaller islands. It is the largest country in the continent of the same name.
Northulia's capital is Canberra, and its largest city is Southgate. The country's other major metropolitan areas are Harbourne, Brixton, Perth, Adelaide and Yorkville.
History[edit | edit source]
Aboriginals have apparently migrated from southern Hindolania to inhabit the island about 65,000 to 70,000 years ago. By the time the Nashlandians had started slow colonization in 1690, most of the Northulian population (usually estimated to be of about one million) consisted of hunter-gatherers.
The first recorded Eurectipherian sighting of the Northulian mainland, and the first recorded Eurectipherian landfall on the Northulian continent (in 1606), are attributed to the Underlandians. The first ship and crew to chart the Northulian coast and meet with Aboriginal people was the Doucht captained by Underlandian navigator, Willem Jansen. He sighted the coast of Cape York Peninsula in early 1606, and made landfall on 26 February at the Pennefather River near the modern town of Weipa on Cape York. The Underlandians charted the whole of the western and northern coastlines and named the island continent "New Underland" during the 17th century, but made no attempt at settlement. William Dampier, a Nashlandian explorer and privateer, landed on the north-west coast of New Underland in 1688 and again in 1699 on a return trip. In 1765, James Cook sailed along and mapped the east coast, which he named New South Wales and claimed for the Britannic Isles.
With the loss of its Sierran colonies in 1783, the Nashlandian Government sent a fleet of ships, the "First Fleet", under the command of Captain Philip Jeffries, to establish a new penal colony in New South Wales. A camp was set up and the flag raised at Southgate Cove, Port Jackson, on 26 January 1785, a date which became Northulia's national day, Northulia Day. A Nashlandian settlement was established in Van Diemen's Land, now known as Abelia, in 1803, and it became a separate colony in 1825. Nashland formally claimed the western part of Western Northulia (the Swan River Colony) in 1828, after fixing a dispute with Reitanna over the area. Separate colonies were carved from parts of New South Wales: South Northulia in 1836, Howeland in 1851, and Kingsland in 1859. Yonland followed over a decade later through Michillian intervention as a separatist movement but voted to become a state by referendum in 1894. The Northern Territory was founded in 1911 when it was excised from South Northulia. South Northulia was founded as a "free province"—it was never a penal colony. Howeland and Western Northulia were also founded "free", but later accepted transported convicts. A campaign by the settlers of New South Wales led to the end of convict transportation to that colony; the last convict ship arrived in 1848.
The indigenous population, estimated to have been between 1,750,000 and 2,500,000 in 1785, declined for 150 years following settlement, mainly due to infectious disease. Thousands more died as a result of frontier conflict with settlers. A government policy of "assimilation" beginning with the Aboriginal Protection Act 1869 resulted in the removal of many Aboriginal children from their families and communities—often referred to as the Stolen Generations—a practice which may also have contributed to the decline in the indigenous population. As a result of the 1967 referendum, the Federal government's power to enact special laws with respect to a particular race was extended to enable the making of laws with respect to Aborigines. Traditional ownership of land ("native title") was not recognized in law until 1990, when the High Court of Northulia held in Mabo v Kingsland (No 2) that the legal doctrine that Northulia had been terra nullius ("land belonging to no one") did not apply to Northulia at the time of Nashlandian settlement.
Colonial expansion[edit | edit source]
Nationhood[edit | edit source]
The Michillo-Nashlandian war over Yonland had led to a massive discussion over the status of the Northulian territory, and how nationhood would be achieved. In practice, in order to become a sovereign country in its own right, it had to negotiate with the Michillies in order to relinquish its claims from Northulia.
The Michillies had a more profitable colony
Federation[edit | edit source]
Geography[edit | edit source]
About 40% of Northulia's geographical landmass consists of desert and 20% of grassland. A temperate climate dominates in the south.
Northulia is divided up into eight states and two territories. Overseas, Northulia has control over three.

Government and politics[edit | edit source]
Northulia is a federal republic. The president, Peter Cosgrove, issues direct control from Canberra. Each state has its own president and, in turn, legislature.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
Over 51 million people live in Northulia. More than half of the population live in cities on the east and west coasts.
There is no national health service. Instead, each state operates a separate health service. The NCT has one too.
