Naghchen TV (Yanikan: Телевизиони Нағчен, Omawatian: Телевициони Наахчен) is a television channel in the republic of Naghchen, in the border with Yaniko. Since the 2021 change of regime in Yaniko, it has since become the only voice of opposition against the current regime, and is frequently tuned in by Yanikans in diaspora. The channel used to have a huge audience in Yaniko before the channel was banned by Yaniko, claiming it was a "terrorist organization".

History[edit | edit source]

Naghchen Radio started in September 1979. High on the success of the experimental station, a test transmission of a television station for Naghchen broadcasting from Qelqot city on channel 10 started in February 1981. The station was the first non-governmental TV station in Omawate as Naghchen at the time was still seen as a buffer zone between Omawate and Yaniko.

In time for the conversion of the Naghchen territories to an Omawatian republic, the station was donated to the Government of the Republic of Naghchen. Subsequently regular broadcasts started on April 10, 1982 of the new Naghchen Television Station, in Omawatian and Yanikan. The channel didn't have permit to broadcast in Yaniko, but was seen in neighboring areas by overspill. On March 9, 1983, the Yanikan government warranted Naghchen TV to impose stricter limitations to its operation, in order not to annoy its communist Yanikan neighbors. Naghchen TV received death threats to its founder on August 14, 1984. The supposed attacker was detained. The cause was due to the spead of misinformation to Yanikan viewers.

Beginning in August 2021, Naghchen TV moved to Tomoweru while still broadcasting to Qelqot. The channel now broadcasts "in safety" and in a more privileged location away from possible Yanikan attacks coming in from the country's border. The vacated Qelqot building is now used by the local television station, Qelqot TV.

Programming[edit | edit source]

Naghchen TV broadcasts a general output over two channels, the main channel started in 1982 and the second channel in 2009. The programming of both channels is virtually identical, only that the first channel after 2021 started to gain more attention to the conflict with Yaniko. Old Yanikan television series are also broadcast.

Foreign television programming is dubbed in Yanikan but in the local dialect, as opposed to the dialect used in the neighboring country.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Portrayal of Yanikans in Yaniko[edit | edit source]

Since 2020, the channel has come under fire for its portayal of Yanikans in Yaniko, claiming that within the country they are "impure", and that when they come to Omawate, they are "pure". Such jokes likely triggered the acceleration of the installation of the authoritarian regime in Yaniko.

Broadcast of Yanikan news programs and analysis[edit | edit source]

Since 2021, Naghchen TV broadcast Panorama with limitations. Footage critical of Omawate's regime was blocked per an editorial policy enacted in January 2021.

Kaizhung is Yaniko in disguise[edit | edit source]

Omawate cut diplomatical ties with the People's Republic of Kaizhung in 2021 and at the same time, the Naghchen TV animation team made a one-minute animated video where the president of the PRK was actually the president of Yaniko in disguise, as he starts to buy all of the PRK's capitalist investments around the world, and creating a Yanikan invasion. The video was seen as "distasteful" by local viewers and the channel was forced to redo its editorial policy after that. Some have even compared the video to "something Plenestine television would do".

"Yaniko is a disease"[edit | edit source]

The political talk show Naghchen Moghta had one controversial segment on October 18, 2021, where one of the panelists said, referring to the Yanikan government, that "Yaniko is a disease". The presenter said that "Yaniko isn't watching us now" whereas the panelist said saying that "there is no cure, only an Omawatian invasion". People believe that Naghchen TV is promoting the reunification of Omawate and Yaniko, nullifying the Campaigns of 1925.

Misinterpretation of the "Yanikans are Welcome" speech[edit | edit source]
