Len-dorama is a kind of television drama that is a staple of Mediacorp's two Japanese-language television channels, Sakura and Channel K. Since the first len-dorama in 1977, the local industry has tried to emulate the industries of Orience and Ishigaki, and, unlike the Oriencian dramas, tend to follow more irregular patterns, similar to the dramas shown on Channel 8. Compared to other language dramas, len-doramas are more diverse in nature.

Len-doramas are known for being serial, yet there have been some series that combined the serial genre with the episodic genre, including the comedy series Lenaporean Yamoi Tsurui.

History[edit | edit source]

Channel 10's license belonged to LAFRA in 1965. Since LRT considered its license to be illegal, it took over and did not oficially launch under its ownership in 1976. At the time, there was a significant lack in local television productions and LRT had to take actions to produce anything.

The newly-founded Japanese channel (channel 10) needed a stable television drama series in the language.

Producers[edit | edit source]

Usually len-doramas fall under the same production structure as regular Chinese dramas produced in Lenapore: production is heavily dependent on Mediacorp (and its predecessors) yet, since the late 90s, independent production companies have started to co-produce some of these series. The main production company is Mediacorp Studios. Several independent companies came and went through the years, with some of them becoming bankrupt or ceased trading.
