Home and Away (often abbreviated as H&A) is a Northulian television soap opera. It was created by Alan Bateman and commenced broadcast on the Seven Network on 17 January 1988. Bateman came up with the concept of the show during a trip to Kangaroo Point, New South Wales, where he noticed locals were complaining about the construction of a foster home and against the idea of foster children from the city living in the area. The soap opera was initially going to be called Refuge, but the name was changed to the "friendlier" title of Home and Away once production began. The show premiered with a ninety-minute pilot episode (subsequently in re-runs known as Home and Away: The Movie). Since then, each subsequent episode has aired for a duration of twenty-two minutes and Home and Away has become the second longest-running drama series in Northulian television. In Northulia, it is currently broadcast from Mondays to Thursdays at 7:00 pm. It used to compete against Neighbours until Network Ten moved it to 5:30pm.

On August 24th, 2018, EndemolShine Group Northulia announced that the series would be moving to the Nine Network in the 2019 season, as part of a network realignment. The move is to prevent Seven from losing money due to the decreasing number of Home and Away viewers on the network and that the money Seven invested in the soap will be used for sports coverage (as a result of Nine trading cricket and the Northulian Open from Seven). The recent Disney-FOX deal, where Disney owns a significant amount of Nine's shares, will also keep international sales to key markets who are aligned to Disney, like Four TSN in Nashland, Channel A in the Michillies, NBN in Hopeland and UWB in Flarland. Seven and Nine will jointly control the archives of the soap; older episodes will now be screened on 9Flix with 9Gem housing repeats of the previous day's episode. The last episode on Seven was transmitted on December 13, 2018, and the first on Nine will be transmitted on February 18th - later than the usual return date of the first working day after the Northulian Open, now carried by Nine. Initially it was speculated that the soap wouldn't return to the usual 7pm slot, or that it might have moved to 9Gem, mimicking Ten's decision to move Neighbours to Eleven (now 10 Beautiful). Nonetheless, the series made its Nine Network premiere on its usual slot. This prompted for a move of A Current Affair to 9News.

Broadcast[edit | edit source]

Asrael[edit | edit source]

The series has been broadcast by several channels: first it was shown by the experimental Channel 2, then on Asrael Educational Television and on Channel 3, a cable channel that eventually split up into several separate channels on Yes and HOT. The series is known as "Near and Far".

Bensonia[edit | edit source]

The series airs on the National Television System since 1990. It is the third-oldest import on the network, behind English dubs of Chapulin and El Chavo. It competes against Neighbours on SBC.

Flarland[edit | edit source]

The series aired on IBC between 1989 and 1998, after which it was picked up by Channel 14 ever since, where it was always shown during the 6pm timeslot. Repeats are shown the following morning or wirking day on Channel Thirteen in the mornings and a Sunday omnibus featuring the four episodes of the week is aired on Channel 14. A 2011 report from the producers of the series and various Flarlandian agencies say that Flarland is the country with the most Home and Away fans, an estimated 24 million people watch it (as well as Neighbours). Merpeople seem to stop activities when Home and Away is on and several fan clubs have been created. Two Home and Away specials aimed at the Flarlandian market were created in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Home and Away has since become Flarland's most popular soap, having experienced an exponential growth between 1999 and 2003. Marketed by the channel as "Northulia's sexiest soap", it attracts unusually high ratings, usually exceeding the 60% mark, meaning that more than half of the population, predominantly the youth, watched it, ecplising the regional news in terms of ratings. The theme song is also popular in karaoke sessions.

It is also reported that Couch Slave Entertainment CEO Khyber Waterman and his sister Arrow Waterman are fans of the show since at least 1998. In 2009, they travelled to Kangaroo Point at the request of the producers. In 2016, when Khyber: The Animated Series moved to Channel 14, the first new episode to air on the channel was a spoof of Home and Away called Hotel and Here set in a fictional seaside hotel in the Gold Coast.

The year's series often premieres on the first Monday following the Northulian Open. The Flarlandian broadcasts feature a custom extended intro using the visuals of the current intro, since the series doesn't air during Flarlandian primetime.

In 2018, at the request of Channel 14, a customized intro and outro for Flarlandian broadcasts was made, featuring an aesthetic inspired by the intro used in 2000. The reason for this was quite simple: many Flarlandians seem to have apparent memories of what Flarlandians call "the golden ages" and Channel 14 is also driven on similar factors. Part of the reason why is because of the fan-approved Hotel and Here parody. This resulted in many Northulians showing apparent criticism at the "backward tactics" of the Flarlandian broadcasts even though the producers have approved such a thing. This measure ended up repelling many viewers from the show.

Even Disney Channel's Flarlandian feed aired it for a while in the mid-2000s, airing episodes from between 2000 and 2004.

Henleys[edit | edit source]

Until 2000, the series aired on Television Broadcasts, the state-run broadcaster. HUB TV then took the rights along Neighbours.

Pakifas[edit | edit source]

The series has been airing on VOP One since 1989, when it was still known as Voice of Pakifas Television, though in the mid-2000s it was broadcast by commercial channel TV3 Pakifas. It can be seen on two more channels available in the territory: Northulia Television International terrestrially and the Golden West Network on cable and satellite.

Port Merwin[edit | edit source]

PMBC Television broadcasts episodes on a few weeks of delay. Neighbours, on the other hand, is more popular on the islands.

Eumoritown[edit | edit source]

The series was broadcast by EBC Television from September 1993. In 2003 the series moved to Eco-Paradise Television where it currently airs at 6pm. Reruns of older episodes can often be found on sister channel Eco-Paradise Sports when no sports events are being broadcast.

Yawnaro[edit | edit source]

The series airs on the television service of the Yawnaro Radio Council four times a week, Tuesdays-Fridays at 6:45pm after Neighbours. The YRC broadcasts the show through a recording of the previous day's episode from HUB TV under legal arrangement. Since the YRC holds a local television monopoly (if the Flarland TV channels legally broadcast in overseas territories don't count), and since the population runs on the few hundreds, Home and Away is known by everyone.

Great Scorria[edit | edit source]

The series premiered on the then-Channel 2 in 1989 and quickly gained a cult following. In 2003, TV3 gained the rights to air it after bidding over it and a deal with Fox to air content from their catalog. Although TV3 was owned by Northulia's Seven Network between 1996 and 1998, it couldn't air the series due to exclusivity rights with TVGS. The series returned to TVGS 2 in 2015.

Briefly, in the early 2010s, the local feed of TeenNick aired reruns.

Hopeland[edit | edit source]

The series is broadcast nationwide by NBN since 1996. Prior to that, it was shown on first-run syndication. NBN showings of the series stabilized Home and Away's reputation and ratings. The series airs nationwide at 5:30pm, competing against Neighbours on IBS.

Reruns are also shown, often on Kingson, Disney Channel and formerly, the local feed of SOAPnet before it shut down.

Irenia[edit | edit source]

Home and Away is broadcast on RTÉ Television at 1:30 pm on RTÉ One and repeated on RTÉ3 at 6:30 pm each weekday. A repeat of the week's episodes is aired on Saturdays and Sundays on RTÉ3. Viewers in the Irenia are also able to catch up with episodes on the RTÉ Player. Home and Away is one of RTÉ's most popular drama series. It was the most watched programme of 2014 on the RTÉ Player with over four million viewers.

Michillies[edit | edit source]

The series premiered on MBC Television in February 1989. It competed against Neighbours on TV Two in the 4pm timeslot, between Nuacht and children's programming. TVA got the rights to Home and Away in 1994.

Currently the Michillies are about two weeks behind Northulia. Same-day reruns are shown on A Two.

Nashland[edit | edit source]

The series premiered on the ITN network in 1989. Home and Away was shown twice a day on ITN, with a lunchtime showing and a tea time repeat; many regions aired it at around 5:10 pm, while others at 6:00 pm or even 6:30 pm. The show attracted up to eight million viewers, making it one of ITN's top 30 rated programmes. It also helped boost audiences for ITN's regional and early evening news bulletins. During the show's last year on ITN, Home and Away attracted an average audience of 4.4 million for its early-evening repeats. In February 2000, it was announced that Home and Away would be moving to rival Channel 5 after they bought the rights to the show in a £40m auction deal. ITN reportedly offered twice the amount by Channel 5, but the Seven Network in Northulia were swayed by Channel 5's commitment to the long-term future of the show in a deal of more than five years. After its run on ITN ended, Home and Away went off air for 12 months as ITN had an exclusivity clause that prevented any other broadcaster from airing the show for a year. After a delay in screening, Home and Away made its debut on Channel 5 on 16 July 2001. In 2016, Four TSN got the rights to air the series airing it as a lead-in to The Simpsons. Episodes are also available online within Nashlandian territory on Four Play.

New Michillies[edit | edit source]

The series airs on TVNM 2 since 1989.

Northulia[edit | edit source]

Seven picked up when it lost the rights to air Neighbours to Ten. Due to the various timezones of the country, the show airs on a delay in central and western states. It also created the ill-fated spin-off headLand, which got cancelled after a few weeks, and, since 2015, various spin-off films, some of them made for Presto, thus not making them available on the linear Seven Network, but were shown on television in Flarland, particularly over the Christmas period when no new episodes are broadcast.

NTI[edit | edit source]

The series is one of the few non-NNB shows to air on Northulia Television International, airing in every country NTI broadcasts to minus the New Michillies who have a dedicated version. The reason why the New Michillian version of the channel is prescribed from airing it is because Television New Michillies has exclusive local rights, though this is also attributed to SKY's local rights over Northulian sporting events seen on the channel.

Wales[edit | edit source]

S4C airs the series twice a day, in English and in Welsh.

In the 90s, the series aired on Teledu Annibynnol, in English.
