Hantai (反大, Hantainese: Hantai, Cantonese: faan1 dai6, Mandarin: Fǎndài) is the name given to the western territories of the Special Administrative Region of Caima. Until 1984, it was a North Arlesburian territory but it was later given over to Caima in order to grow its land and to help sustain the University of Caima (known until 1991 as University East Sondria). It is currently part of Cantonia.

History[edit | edit source]

North Arlesburian control[edit | edit source]

Hantai was annexed in 1860 following Michillian pressure, who desired the port of Hantai for their Sondrian project that would annex the territory to the control of what is now Bedu. The first Governor-General of the new territory was Lewis Hartley, who would gain the nickname "Mr. Hantai" by the international press in later years.

Like all posessions it had, it went through the abolition of monarchy and conversion of North Arlesbury to a republic in 1910.

Transfer of control to Caima[edit | edit source]

Instability arose when North Arlesbury abandoned the New State regime and all of its overseas colonies demanded either their independence or their annexation. Hantai was the only colony to demand annexation, not by Kaixhung, but by Caima, by transferring control of the territory to Real.

In October 1975, members of both parties began a series of agreements to hand over the control of Hantai to Caima. The agreements said that, with Hantai as part of Caima, there would be more land available and that Hantai would be the headquarters of the local university, initially known as University East Sondria. The talks terminated exactly one year later and the handover was on October 1, 1976. For the next 23 years, Hantai was part of Real, and later part of Caima.

Hantai today[edit | edit source]

A significant part of Hantai is occupied by the University of Caima and residential buildings. Some shops do exist and are primarily occupied by the ethnic Hantainese.

Hantai is losing its historical significance due to the merger of the colonies over forty years ago - an impression that still continues today, as hundreds of people, especially the elderly, still remember the autonomous age.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Language[edit | edit source]

As a part of Caima, Chinese (particularly Mandarin) and Portuguese are the official languages, yet English and Hantainese are de jure official languages. Hantainese is a dialect of Bedu that was brought to the colony before the lease and features the non-tonal composition of the Bedu language and has over 140 characters. Hantainese is known to have around 20.000 speakers and studies of the dialect are limited, in favor of Cantonese, the "official language".

Demographics[edit | edit source]

Hantai is populated by 146.953 people according to the December 2018 estimates. This accounts to around a fifth of the population of Caima as a whole.

Media[edit | edit source]

The Hantai Times is published on Sundays. It is published in Hantainese with some pages in English.

The NABC used to have a transmitter station in Hantai broadcasting a service, said service was given over to Radiodifusão Realense do Ultramar and later Teledifusão da Caima as its English radio service. TDC also operates a Hantai Channel (aka TDC Hantai) with limited Hantainese programming.

Parts of Hantai are served by Caima Cable TV. The service already has TNA International by default.
