HWUF-TV is a local television station in Albany, the capital of Hopeland.

It started broadcasting in 1961 as Hopeland's 126th televisiom station overall and the first station to broadcast in the UHF frequency.

Through time it went through many owners and is now the central station of the U Network.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1959, the city of Albany was granted a license to operate a station on the UHF band. At the time, UHF television was being rolled out in the United States where it benefitted the smaller cities that could get one or two commercial stations.

Due to the experimental nature of the station, it was given over to the government and would determine the liability of UHF broadcasts.

HWUF started broadcasts on December 9, 1961. The UF in the calls reinforced its status as an UHF station. As an experimental station, it relayed programs from the existing television stations at the time. On December 9, 1962, HWUF's trial year finished and broadcasts became regular, as a secondary affiliate of Hopelandian Educational Television. As the years went on, it became more of a city-oriented channel, under the Type B Public license, making the station look more like a PBS member station, relying on contributions from viewers to continue operating.

The station was a short-time affiliate of the ill-fated Premiere Television Network. During the network's tenure, it had to drop its affiliation and sell it to a business news network.
