Gienęlys Ramkovski
Gienęlys Ramkovski is an Ashtalaian-Omdalian businessman best known for being the president of ATK and tbe holding that owned the channel from 2008 to 2011, during Operation Cobweb. He was detained on March 8, 2011 for leaking state secrets which concerned the Ashtalaian government's interference in ATK after the signing of the Foreign Agent law in 2009. For allegedly "mocking" the government upon releasing them on a forum the night before, he was detained and sent to Vilvek Prison.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Born in 1966 to a pair of agricultural businessman in the Fascist regime, the youngest of three children, Ramkovski was born in the Ashtalaian village of Byra. His mother was Ashtalaian and his fater, Omdalian. As a young child, Ramkovski traveled to Omdalia at least twice a year to see his relatives, but this was interrupted due to the 1974-1976 political turmoil.
Detention[edit | edit source]
On March 7, 2011, Ramkovski uploaded graphics from official government documents to his Facebook account - not released to the public - over state interventions in several media outlets confiscated or shut down by the Ashtalaian government since March 7, 2009. The bulk of these graphics involved ATK's government spending and intervention in the period between January 2009 and December 2010.
This is what the government is wasting on the ruining of independent media! Hundreds of millions of Flarlandian dollars were redirected to bank accounts in tax havens due to reinforcement of the idea that media funded by foreigners should never be allowed in Ashtalaia! And yet they want to censur us from existence?
These graphics (produced in January 2011 under a grant from the authorities during the Operation Cobweb investigations) rigned signs of alarm from authorities over his comments regarding the state of Ashtalaian media, especially ATK, and led to a period of detainment.
At 18:30 on March 8, Ramkovski was out for dinner, when police were at his home withdrawing him from going out "until further notice". Ramkovski later called journalists who were outside his houss as "cowards" and "wanted to destroy them with the strength of two tornados", referring to journalists with connections to the government. Shortly before 22:00, Ramkovski was separated from the remaining family members and his public life being sentenced to jail at the Vilvek Prison for an "undetermined amount of time". His bank accounts, reportedly held in Flarland, were frozen.
Shortly after his arrest, it was demanded that relatives who had access to Ramkovski's Facebook profile would delete the post and any carriage of the government graphics and data would be punishable by law until he was detained. Initial projections of "a few weeks" were proven to be fruitless as his treatment in jail became harsher as the weeks went by. It became frequent to stage protests in favor of Ramkovski, demanding his liberation from jail because "Ramkovski revealed what the government didn't want to show".
