Genovia (French: Génovie), oficially the Principality of Genovia (French: Principauté de Génovie, Italian: Principalità di Genovia) is a country in Eurectipheria. Geographically located between Reitanna and the Michillies similarly to Sri Britain, it acts as a sovereign country located on the eastern Michillian coast. The principality is a member of the Eurectipherian Union, being the smallest country by both size and population..

History[edit | edit source]

Siennan Empire[edit | edit source]

Napoleonic invasions[edit | edit source]

Genovia was a vassal state of Étienne during the Napoleonic invasions of 1814, despite its geographical location.

Genovia and the Michillian New State[edit | edit source]

Genovia, despite its size, quickly became a "hot spot" for a small number of refugees from the conservative Michillian government that lasted from 1945 to 1984. Important Michillian political figures of the time used Genovia as a hiding spot because of its status while its neighbors were at a risky situation.

Modernization[edit | edit source]

The Michillian coup in February 1984 had led to the introduction of a significant number of reforms to the functioning of Genovia. Absolutism was abandoned in June 1984 and a small parliament - consisting of five seats - was officially put into place. Despite these plans, Genovia lost much of its population - mostly Michillian immigrants - as the Michillies have oficially secularized themselves and turned into a rapidly growing economy. During the 90s, Genovia was at a turning point, with the country becoming unstable to pay its debt. In an unusual move, Genovia applied for membership at the Eurectipherian Union in 1993 and formally joined in 1995. By then the Michillies were in talks to establish a currency union with Genovia and Solenial, with

Demographics[edit | edit source]

The country has a population of 1.181, making it the second least-populated sovereign country in the world, behind the Holy See, even though geographically Genovia is three times larger. Nearly the entire population is concentrated at the Royal Genovian Palace.

Nearly a fourth of the population is part of the Genovian Royal Family.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Languages[edit | edit source]

Due to Étiennese and Iterian immigration in the 17th and 18th centuries, there are three official languages, French, Italian and the official government language, English. Dutch is also widespread due to holidaymakers from the Underlands who go to Genovia every year.

Popular culture[edit | edit source]

A series of teenage books known as The Princess Diaries was written by Sierran novelist Anne Hathaway, depicting an alternate reality where Genovia was more prosperous. The books generated two live-action feature-length films, The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. These two films were produced by Disney, and feature a near-accurate portrayal of Genovia.

Media[edit | edit source]

Genovia has a weekly newspaper. It is published in English and features small French and Italian sections.

The Genovian Broadcasting Corporation oversees all radio and television operations in the country. They operate one radio station and one television station. GBC TV broadcasts for four hours a day starting at 7pm. It's also known for its participations in the Eurectivision Song Contest, mostly coming from foreigners who will represent the country.

Genovia Telecom is the country's telephone, internet and television provider. Due to its populational size a subscription television service is unviable. Genovia Telecom provides a 21-channel universal service consisting of GBC TV, Michillian over-the-air television channels and a handful of international television channels. The feeds for most channels are provided by Eos.
