Flarland is represented in the Eurectivision Song Contest by the two entities that are its members: the Flarlandian Broadcasting Corporation and University of Wembley Broadcasting. It debuted in 1964 yet was known in its first decades by a constant string of absences (see below) and managed to earn two wins: in 1983 and in 2015. Flarland never finished last in the contest.

History[edit | edit source]

Together with its neighbor Ashtalaia, the country debuted in 1964. Flarland is located in the subcontinental island of Ashtalaia, when, at the time of debut, the contest concentrated largely on microwave links within continental Eurectipheria, any hopes of Flarland joining the contest were considered "null". In 1960, representatives from the broadcasting organizations of the five Ashtalaic countries, all members of the EBU, set up a microwave "micro network" known as Ashtavision. The network was completed in 1962, with hopes for a marine cable linking mainland Eurectipheria to Ashtalaia's eastern coast being built with assistance of mainland members. Flarland got to see the contest in May 1963, under a pre-recorded broadcast weeks after the contest was made, on FBC 1. This was in a time where convenient methods of delivering events worldwide was still complicated and in experimental phase.

Flarland joined the contest in 1964, with Richard Perkins and his song "Distance". It is believed that the song was written in protest to the deficiency of the Eurectivision network linked up to Ashtavision, where the contest was broadcast live. However, a failure in July 1964 led to the dissolution of the link and this prevented Flarland and Ashtalaia to compete in the contest.

The Eurectivision network saw a major breakthrough in 1967, when the Ashtavision network decided to join the Our World broadcast on June 25, 1967. Flarland had just opened their satellite communications station weeks before and broadcast the entire event live. This created a new incentive for Flarland and the other Ashtalaic countries to try joining - comparatively speaking, the remaining countries' economies were not enough to open satellite stations in order to enter Eurectivision and air other worldwide events.

When Irenia won for the first time, both countries won, as Irenia had finished work on a satellite station in 1969. RTÉ and the EBU invited the Flarlandian Broadcasting Corporation to enter the contest for a second time. Richard Perkins was at it again, this time with "Sinner".

Absences[edit | edit source]

Organization[edit | edit source]

National selection[edit | edit source]

The national selection doesn't have a fixed name. Out of thirty-three Flarlandian participations, only twenty-six had some sort of selection event - the remaining seven were all internal selections.

Overseas territories and the Eurectivision Song Contest[edit | edit source]

Out of the five overseas territories of Flarland, three of them are located in the Eurectipherian Telecommunications Area (the Henleys, Eumoritown and Yawnaro). The other two are located outside of this area (the Pakifas to the west of Northulia and Port Merwin to the east). Until 2011, votes only applied for the Atlantean/Eurectipherian territories. The local broadcasters in the Pakifas (VOP) and Port Merwin (PMBC) were allowed to show it on delay until then, with Flarland TV (represented by the External Broadcasting Corporation, itself an EBU member since its foundation) airing it live.
