Ferntrench
Ferntrench, officially the Federal Republic of Ferntrench and the Home Islands, is a sovereign island nation in Tyntalsya. The country was founded on July 4, 1797 as a colony of Flarland during its westward expansion phase, yet achieved independence on February 12, 1942.
History[edit | edit source]
The modern history of Ferntrench begins circa 1565 A.D., when the Britannic Empire Company (BEC) conquered what is now the territory of Ferntrench. Nashland set up a colony in 1572. The Kingdom of Fow Toth already laid claim to most of the territory, and declared war on the Hayastelaris in 1574. The "Ten Years War", as it was called, ended in complete victory for Fow Toth. In 1579, the Treaty of Portsmouth was signed, and Fow Toth ushered in direct control over Ferntrench.
Client state era[edit | edit source]
The client state era of colonial Ferntrench lasted from 1579 to 1708. During most of this period, Ferntrench was ruled by different governors, with each one being appointed by the Kings of Ferntrench, Horisca IV (1579-1590) and Borleica (1590-1635). The economy was mainly driven by fishing and agriculture. The Ferntrenchians allowed colonists to elect their own representatives to take care of local affairs. Unfortunately, a bloody coup took place in Fow Toth around 1639, installing the army into power.
Changes were immediately felt in the colony. Whatever civil liberties and freedoms colonists enjoyed were revoked with the passage of the Ferntrench Colonial Limitations Act of 1641. Trucial forces were granted nearly unlimited powers in detaining and arresting colonists. The last straw for the colonists came in 1697, when the arrest of James Hoyke for publishing a newspaper criticizing the colonial government was made public. Colonists took up arms and began to fight Stadionia for their freedom. The Kingdom of Albion, long time enemies of Ferntrench, entered the war in 1703 on the colonists' side. Fow Toth surrendered on July 6, 1708, in the town of the same name that now lays the nation's capital. The surrender ended 129 years of the client state rule. During all of its existence, Ferntrench/Fow Toth was a client state of Britannia.
