The Dongso Broadcasting Company (DSB) was a Daehanian commercial broadcaster that operated from 1961 to 1980.

History[edit | edit source]

Dongso Broadcasting was one of the first commercial radio broadcasters in Daehan. It was founded in 1961 by the Dongso Ilbo newspaper and quickly branched out into television. On April 7, 1964, DBC opened its television service with limited coverage (broadcasts covered Sandong) and a special show at the Shinsegae department store, where the television facilities were located. It was the fourth television channel in Daehan, if Daehan Television doesn't count. Its competing newcomer, TBC, started broadcasting on April 1. Strong competition and the then-recent growth of the SBS network resulted in DBC losing viewership figures.

In 1966, DBC's radio and television offices moved to the Dongso Media Center.

Hegemony[edit | edit source]

The years that followed led to an unexpected hegemony for the broadcaster, expanding its coverage area on both radio and television and launching new, iconic programs.

Crisis[edit | edit source]

The oil crisis of 1973 had profoundly affected the Daehanian television industry. Broadcasts were limited to five hours an evening in order to save energy like every other channel. Despite the alleviation of the crisis in 1974, DBC was still in deep recession.

Closure[edit | edit source]

The Media Consolidation Plan led to DBC's shutdown on both radio and television. On November 30, 1980, DBC broadcast its last program, Farewell, DBC Family. It was produced in color so that DBC had hopes of resuming operations in the future. The radio stations became DBS Radio 3 and DBS FM 2, and the television channel became DBS 2. At closing time, DSB operated nationwide on radio and in five large cities on television. DBS's plan was to extend the coverage of the new service to the whole country.

Who is the real successor?[edit | edit source]

In 2009, media regulations changed. This led to the creation of four "general networks" on cable television. Dongso reopened its television operations, but under a new name, Channel D, on December 1st, 2011.

On the other side, there's an opinion that says that DBS 2 is the real successor of DBC. Two of its programs, News Plaza and Show Show Show survived the switch over and only News Plaza is shown today, on DBS 1. Besides, DBS still holds much of the DBC archives.
