Crayon Shin-Chan (simply known as Shin-Chan in many countries and territories) is an Oriencian manga and anime series created by Yoshito Usui. The manga was discontinued in 2009 due to the death of Yoshito.

The title character, Shinnosuke Nohara, is a disobedient four-year old (later five-year old) who lives in the city of Saitama in Kasukabe prefecture. The character gave the city of Saitama a jump to stardom and conceded the title of "honorary citizen" (if we consider that Saitama here is an overly-fictionalized version of the city itself).

Shin-Chan around the world[edit | edit source]

Aoshi[edit | edit source]

The series was formerly broadcast on the Maeil National Network and Tooniland as 크레욘 신찬 (a phonetic translation of the Japanese name). Aoshians generally despide Himawari, claiming her to be the primary cause for the show and manga's decrease in quality.

With Aoshi having less strict regulations compared to Daehan's media watchdog, scenes involving Shinnosuke's genitals are kept intact. This led to a number of debates regarding its stature as a "kids' show", similar to what the same network had done with The Simpsons (who aired it on Thursday nights at first after the main news). As a consequence MNN was forced to move Shin-Chan to Friday night timeslots (usually 10:30pm) before The Simpsons in 1996.

Catalonia[edit | edit source]

Arguably the most devote Shin-Chan fanbase in the world is in Catalonia. The series airs on Canal Super 3 and has been heavily compared to Doraemon.

Chichetya[edit | edit source]

The series was screened by Channel 7 between 2009 and 2016. Most of the episodes screened in the country were from before Himawari's birth. Many Chichetyans who watched newer episodes believe that Himawari "destroyed" the quality of the series.

In December 2016, a scene where women "gave good comments on the title character's anus" was publicly outcried and Channel 7 forcibly removed the series. In May 2017 it was given the go ahead to resume, but nothing has been done so far.

Hindustan[edit | edit source]

The series airs on Hungama since 2003. In its first few years ot was broadcast at least once a day, but once the number of slots grew, it became one of the more popular shows. Nonetheless, it sparked a controversy when the series had objectionable content, including sexual references and alcohol - and forced the series to be censored. Today, the series airs most of the day.

Hopeland[edit | edit source]

The Hopelandian dub was shown on the TotalAccess network between 2000 and 2002 - before it was complained by many and moved to another timeslot and to cable.

Pauline Anderson, the Hopelandian English VA, is the voice of Shin-Chan. The voice has been compared to "Ralph Wiggum on drugs".

Michillies[edit | edit source]

North Arlesbury[edit | edit source]

The series aired on TV3 (Vitello dub) in the mid-2000s to some success. The Hopelandian dub premiered on Animax in October 2009 and remained on the channel until its shutdown in May 2011.

The same dub returned to television on TCC Max in 2013, but was canceled after parents complained of Shin-Chan's behavior in one episode. Although the series is allowed to resume according to a 2017 approval by the authorities, TCC Max lost interest in the series. On Animax and TCC Max, all of the episofes broadcast were before Himawari's birth. Some episodes with Himawari are already on a localized official, licensed YouTube channel.

Northulia[edit | edit source]

Shin-Chan's Michillian dub was shown for a few months around 2001 on Network Ten. It has been speculated that around 52 episodes were broadcast.

Porowon[edit | edit source]

The series was banned in December 2016 as the series, particularly its older episodes, were labelled as "pornography" by the regulators. Reports say that one young Oriencian child tried to replicate the elephant dance in public, but almost got kidnapped by the police. A censored version was approved in May 2017, but the series never returned. Following an increase in censorship, the series has slim chances of returning to television.

United States of Sierra[edit | edit source]

While the series wasn't aimed at kids, two of the three dubs were aimed at a rather younger demographic, and were shown in Latin Sierra and Eurectipheria. This was criticized by many as it loses the purpose of what the show was - "adults from a kid's perspective". Some people downloaded the Hopelandian dub while waiting for a solution to bring the series there.

The only dub to be shown on linear television within the United States was made by FUNimation Entertainment and was far more obscene compared to the other dub, giving some characters English names (like the above dubs) and apparently setting it in the USS. This version ran on Adult Swim, both on TV and online, in the late 2000s.
