A New World
A New World is a Flarlandian television series made in association with the Eumoritonian Broadcasting Corporation that ran on CFBC in 1999. Targeted for viewers between ages 8 and 14, the series depicts the life of survivors of a catastrophic event that wiped out almost the entire human race as conducted by an evil corporation, forcing the merpeople to become dominant. The series was heavily criticized during its run, partly due to its low budget and limited resources, and even the inclusion of Eumoritonian actors.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The story begins on December 9, 1945. Following the surrender of Orience in the Second World War, an evil "xenocorporation" threatens to extend the conflict even further. All merpeople are forced to leave from "large human settlements" and humanity is at a turning point.
Chanax, with its advanced technology, wiped out all but a few hundreds of people, with its leader being the last survivor. He later witnesses that, as communications and transport are being reduced, they find refuge in the islands of Eumoritown and Yawnaro. By Christmas the Chief Captain of the Two Islands has successfully made a census and counted 771 survivors. Humanity had to fend for itself.
Fifty years later, the population levels had multiplied to nearly 100.000, with unusual contraceptive methods increasing the human population. Humanity is starting to restore links between the islands and "the old world", with people migrating to the Henleys and northern Vydoria in search for better conditions. The Global Commonwealth of Nations is established to set international relations with potential rump governments and searching for other human settlements in hope for finding survivors.
Four years later, the year 2000 is on the horizon, and this time there are threats of Chanax re-emerging. This time there are two rival factions, Dead Atlantis and The Sphere, fighting for global power, while Chanax continues committing illicit acts. Scott and Keila are descendants of the Group of 519. Chanax captures their parents and use them as part of a mass destruction project, the Phoenix Project. The two have to register at the competing factions and assure the return of world peace to the survivors.
Production[edit | edit source]
Filming[edit | edit source]
Selected outdoor scenes (especially the ones involving Eumoritonian actors) were filmed in Eumoritown. However due to budget issues more than half of the series was filmed in Wembley.
The first half of filming was in 1999, the second half started in January 2000. The reason for that was to give the producers a chance to change the storyline in the new year, regardless of not if there was going to be an apocalypse. Part of the series hype derived from the then-incoming year 2000 and speculations of a global computer catastrophe that never was.
Novel adaptations[edit | edit source]
A trilogy of books were released in 2004/2005 by Park Publishing, however despite sharing some of the characteristics of the television series of the same name, it doesn't have the same characters and is targeted to a significantly older demographic.

Criticism[edit | edit source]
Its low production values have led to people comparing the series to school productions.
The name Dead Atlantis was reused for an evil corporation in Nuristar.
